Bluff Creek is one of the oldest churches in Johnson County and began in 1827 as a small group of 22 residents meeting in the home of Mr. Henry Brown. In 1836, the first church building was constructed from hewn logs and the help of local farmers. In 1884, the building was torn down and rebuilt at the church's current location. A tan brick veneer and additional space for classrooms was added in 1916.
On February 20th, 1946 tragedy struck as the building was engulfed by fire. Immediate plans were made to rebuild. The Bedford limestone building, situated closest to SR144, was dedicated on May 22, 1949. Several additions were made to this building in both 1963 and 1970. New construction began after outgrowing the limestone building.
In 2012, the doors opened on the new structure which allows space for numerous activities including a children's wing, a spacious auditorium that can also be used as a gymnasium, and a fellowship hall as well as an adult wing with classrooms. The limestone building now houses our student center, church offices, and Shoes for Souls shoe pantry.
The history of Bluff Creek speaks to the faithfulness of God and also the loyalty of the church members who continue to persevere. We look forward to our bicentennial celebration in 2027.
