"What you intended for evil, God intended for good." Who would have predicted these astonishing words, especially when spoken by a victim to his betrayers? Even the most forgiving person hesitates when faced with the question, "Could I forgive the very people who caused me intense pain?" This inconceivable mercy is exactly what Joseph did when he was reunited with his brothers who sold him into slavery. By this statement, Joseph's betrayal was reframed; his pain and suffering were transformed to serve the greater purpose of "saving many lives." His fractured family is made whole as the larger story of redemption unfolds.
Long before Mark penned the words, "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah," God chose a family, a group of people through which he would bring redemption to the world. During the coming weeks, we are going to examine the story of Joseph, his sinful and dysfunctional family, retracing the beginnings of redemption. We'll look for God's handiwork, observing his promises and patterns found in his saving works of salvation, precursors of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
